Our Accomplishments
Urban and rural Texans need to work together to help each other. This year, Texas Toll Party focused on Central Texas and
discovered a number of tools that worked. Large numbers of citizens applying political pressure is the key to success. The "Achilles heel" of every self-serving politician is his/her addiction to power. We will share our tools, grow in numbers, kick some toller/looter booty and then celebrate our successes as Texans against tolls.
The following are examples of things ATP has accomplished to date:
- We removed our first toller, County Commissioner Karen Sonleitner (43%) with our new champion Sarah Eckhardt (57% of the vote!) in 2006, in the first toller vs. nontoller election in Travis County!
- We removed our second toller, Dwight Thompson, Mayor
of Westlake Hills and Vice Chair of the Capital Area
Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) for his
votes to toll roads we've already paid for in 2004 and
2005. We put our money where our mouth is and our
campaign impressively moved the race by 15 points in
less than 2 weeks!
- We led the statewide effort of coalition partners to stop Prop 9 in the 2005 election
- Altered a double taxation freeway toll plan that TxDOT and our local Regional Mobility Authority (RMA) said, "Cannot be altered."
- Forced the removal of MoPAC Wm/Cannon Bridge from the toll plan. (MoPAC Wm/Cannon Bridge)
- Postponed tolling on East Austin's 71 & 183 for two years. (East Austin's 71 & 183)
- Pressured those in power to withdraw funding to toll a portion of the 360 freeway.
- Stopped eleven proposed freeway tolls and caused them to be pulled from the 2030 plan.
- Convinced our City Council to do the crucial study after our Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) refused to do an independent review of the freeway toll plan.
- Helped draft, testify for and pass our first bill, HB 1708, which puts conflict of interest laws in place for Texas RMA's.
- Rejuvenated political reforms via statewide initiatives & referendums which will give organized groups like ours some muscle.
Together we are:
- Making "Privatizing and tolling our Freeways" and the "Trans Texas Corridor" the major issues for all upcoming elections, locally and statewide!
- Creating local,
national (1 & 2) and International Press coverage to help spread our message.
- Working together to continue to educate, organize and empower Texans.
- Continuing to grow (past our tens of thousands of Texans), succeed on this issue and work together to ensure our representatives represent Texans and not the special interests.
